The banter about one of her favorite television shows distracted her enough to chase the shakiness from her voice. Arguing which season was the best entertained him on a level he hadn’t experienced in a long time. In her point of view, seasons 4, 5, and 11 were the best. He agreed on 11, and 4, but 5 was iffy. He liked 6 better.

“First, I can’t get over that you kept watching the show and second—why would like 6 better?” The challenge amused him, but he had a feeling she’d like the answer better.

“Dean.” He checked his phone; Tex had been to the farm in Loudoun County and run a sweep. It was as safe as they could make it. He’d also left a drop car outside Vienna. They would be able to swap out soon. Trusting his own instincts, though, Flint changed lanes and left the highway to use surface streets.

Easier to spot a tail outside the thickness of interstate traffic.

“Really?” Trudi took the bait, then suspicion underscored her tone. “Are you messing with me?”

“Nope. He survived one of the worst things that can happen to a guy—the death of his brother in a war he never wanted to fight in the first place.” It cut a little too close to home for him, the first time he’d seen it. The second—the second, he understood. “He did everything he could to save Sam, to bring him back, and his brother went down to save him. Fucking. Sucks.”

“But Sammy was okay…”

“Eventually.” Don’t get him started on that twist. One more circle of a new block and they were in the clear. He’d go the back way and avoid the Greenway after they swapped cars. It would take longer, but it would be safer. “He wasn’t okay, and then he went to build this pretend life, going through the motions.”

“He loved them, though. Dean is capable of being a great father, he raised his kid brother, didn’t he?”

Sounded good in principal. “Except when you’re that damaged, you can’t trust your own feelings where people are concerned. Especially not the people you love the most.” He couldn’t help glancing back at her. A small frown tightened her brow. Decompressing after a mission could take a couple of bottles of bourbon and a hotel room for a long weekend. Even then… He shook his head. The experienced guys all said the same thing—they were the most dangerous right after a mission. “He didn’t belong there, not in his head or his heart. Making that life was a choice to honor a promise to his brother, but it doesn’t mean the same as being committed to it. All he could think about was the brother he left behind.”

He empathized with the feeling.

“It’s hard to be the one left behind, too.” Trudi cleared her throat. “But I see your point. Harder to understand if you haven’t been in those same trenches. No matter how much Lisa wanted to be there for him, she really couldn’t be.
